Nowadays, humanity has lost its connection with nature, especially by night. Nocturnal nature has been modified by the introduction of artificial light, causing an unmeasurable loss of dark night skies. This kind of pollution prevent the new generations for growing up with a relationship with the cosmos, which has inspired and generated many questionings that are the basis of scientific knowledge and thinking. Astrophotography has been a social influence tool for cultural and scientific education, which empowers populations through activities that relate astronomy and culture, promoting awareness on the importance of night skies as heritage for each individual, population, culture and the entire world. This paper presents the diverse activities carried out in Guatemala and other countries, in order to promote night skies protection and its declaration as a universal heritage. |
