GALAXY CRUISE is the first citizen science project of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) using big data taken by the Subaru Telescope. Citizen Astronomers classify and identify interacting galaxies in vast cosmic images which are displayed one after another on a PC or tablet screen. Its website has some unique features like detailed training sessions and gamification events. The Japanese site opened on November 1, 2019, and the English site opened on February 19, 2020. As of October 15, 2021, there are 7932 registered Citizen Astronomers from 87 countries and regions, and the total classification results of galaxies have exceeded 2 million. Based on the users’ questionnaire results in July 2021, some unique features of GALAXY CRUISE such as high-quality cosmic images and thorough training sessions are thought to be the key components to motivate Citizen Astronomers. |
