Abstract: Light pollution is a threat to the wilderness of the night sky, with negative affects on the environment. I would like to share my experiences with STEAM cross disciplinary approach to light pollution mitigation. At the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory, the outdoor experiential programs involve storytelling telling and metaphoric themes. This is an ideal communication tool to discuss raise awareness and engage students in stewardship. I will share how the programs developed are designed to investigate challenges and solutions within light pollution impacts. The activities are designed for students to recognize their agency in their communities, which can translate into positive action. I will provide a virtual opportunity by taking participants through our process and how metaphor is a tool for communicating scientific concepts. Through the tools of survey and small group discussion, I will ask attendees their perceptions of metaphor and provide examples of how they might use metaphor in their own programs. I will run through examples of how I use metaphor and as well provide attendees with a toolkit how they can create metaphoric narratives within their interpretive pedagogy. Break outs sessions will ask groups to use toolkit within a sample context. When we gather again, groups will share how they utilized the interpretive tool kit. A post activity discussion will facilitate the exchange of ideas, resources. I will then describe our challenges and outcomes of my programs and advocacy efforts. I will wrap up the workshop with a discussion on how to share sensitive or upsetting content with an audience in a positive and respective way—Effects of light pollution, the harmful impacts but the new technologies and grassroots mitigation. My objective for the workshop is to not only share my experiences but to also provide a forum for attendees to learn from each other.
