Abstract: |
Incorporating principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) into planetary science engagement and outreach activities is critical to meet the needs of diverse audiences. As other astronomy programs strive to bring DEIA into their work, how can they adapt a DEIA framework and how can evaluation support efforts through clear and timely feedback? The Planetary ReaCH program evaluation team worked in partnership with science educators and NASA scientists to determine observable indicators: what does DEIA look like in practice? Are there discreet elements or are they inextricably intertwined? We then tested indicators across three pilot workshops. The resulting framework was shared in our session for feedback, revision, and potential generalization to other settings. In this session, participants learned about the Planetary ReaCH program, a NASA sponsored effort to increase engagement of Black and Latinx youth in planetary science. As planetary science and astronomy programs seek to grow and improve their DEIA acumen, they will need evaluation support. Participants learned about the project and the related evaluation process during this session. Everyone engaged in a discussion and added to the jamboards about the usefulness of the ReaCH DEIA framework and how it might be applied to other settings such as the October 2023 and April 2024 solar eclipses. We broadly shared ways to incorporate and evaluate for DEIA in a way that empowers programs to continue their efforts and improve results for all audiences. |
