Experience from being in the path of totality for the 2017 solar eclipse demonstrated that making solar observing a commonplace activity will be critical for widespread safe solar eclipse observing experiences. In Kentucky, most K-12 schools near the path of totality for the 2017 total solar eclipse ended up cancelling class on the day, with the regrettable result that those students and their families were left to deal for themselves with how to safely enjoy observing the event. A trigger for this situation was the letter sent to school districts offering a liability release form that all students must sign for that district to avoid being held responsible for the damage their students would incur while viewing the eclipse. Having safe solar observing be introduced as a regular activity for students can be the key to preventing such sad situations for future solar eclipses. |
