| Abstract: |
They say some things are once in a lifetime, but we are lucky enough to live in an area where we get to experience a total solar eclipse, twice! When we found that Southern Illinois would be the “crossroads” for both eclipse events, we knew we had to get started planning. We are three elementary teachers from southern Illinois who had a will, and were determined to find the right way to teach about the phenomenon of a total solar eclipse. We started attending conferences and serving on local eclipse planning committees. Next, we developed a website, multidisciplinary lesson plans, and connected with a variety of experts to make sure our students would be well-prepared. When we were more confident, we presented at a variety of local and national conferences. In addition to sharing what we had learned with other educators, we used our new-found knowledge, and resources to engage our students, building content knowledge and interest in STEAM education along the way. Prior to the day of the event, our students were more than ready, and they were excited to act as “ambassadors” for the eclipse. In this presentation, we will share what worked, what needs a little more work, and what we have planned for the big day in 2024! |
