Abstract: |
The high-mass X-ray binary SMC X-1/Sk 160 was observed for almost one complete binary orbit (3.89 days) with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE), providing spectra covering 905–1180 Ä with a spectral resolution of 0.05 Å. The O VI P Cygni profile is strongly modulated by the effects of the X-ray source on the wind of the B0 I primary. Ovi is absent near X-ray source conjunction and anomalously strong during and prior to X-ray source eclipse. Other stellar wind diagnostics (S IV, P V, Si IV) have strengths that are typical for a B0 supergiant in the SMC and show only small changes with orbital phase. The behavior of Nv 1240 and Civ 1550 with orbital phase in archival HST spectra is similar to that of OVI. |
