Abstract: Several sources of variance are considered with respect to the long term Ca II H+K observation of 90 lower main-sequence stars. The principal contributions to variation come from transient stellar phenomena, stellar rotation, active region evolution, activity cycles, and nonstellar effects, which can be separated by analyzing the variance of the effects over a spectrum of time scales. Pooled variance spectra are given for the sun, two G stars, and two F stars, yielding activity-cycle plateaus, rotational modulations, and fractional variances for these objects.
