Abstract: We summarize the work done in the last decade on characterizing magnetic fields in star-forming regions using the comparison of spectral lines from coexistent ion and neutral molecular species. We discuss how the presence of magnetic fields was originally deduced observationally through the relative narrowing of ion spectral line profiles, and the relationship of this narrowing to the inclination of the magnetic field to the line of sight. We also briefly describe the more recent work of Li & Houde (2008) where the same effect was analyzed through the comparison of the characteristics of the turbulence power spectra of coexistent ions and neutrals, and its implication for the determination of the inclination angle.
