Abstract: |
The Cepheid Period-Luminosity (PL) relation is of paramount importance in astrophysics in establishing a distance scale that can be used to estimate Hubble's constant at better than 2% accuracy. Here we present convincing evidence that the Cepheid PL relations in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC, Z=0.004) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC, Z=0.008) are highly dynamic quantities that vary significantly when considered as a function of pulsational phase. We found that there is a difference in PL relations as a function of phase between LMC and SMC Cepheids. The most likely cause for this is the metallicity difference in these two galaxies. |
