Abstract: The observed paucity of neutral hydrogen in the diffuse intergalactic medium at all epochs z approximately less than 5 indicates that the intergalactic medium has been highly ionized throughout much of the age of the universe. At some time between the well-known epoch of recombination at z = 1000, which left the gas largely neutral, and z = 5, therefore, the universe must have passed through an epoch of reionization. We review briefly recent observational and theoretical progress towards understanding the nature and source of the reionization of the intergalactic medium and its implications for cosmology.
