Abstract: The dynamical analyses possible for the quiescent soft X-ray transients (SXTs) have shown that they have similarly high mass ratios to the SU UMa class of cataclysmic variable (CV). Furthermore some of the properties displayed by SU UMas in ``super-outburst'' (e.g. superhumps) have also been seen in SXTs, and while these arise due to tidal dissipation in the accretion disc, the effects of X-ray irradiation can (surprisingly) render them visible in SXTs. Recent SXTs have been studied over significant fractions of their period of outburst activity to reveal more details of these CV-like properties. They hold out the promise of providing constraints on the nature of the compact object during the outburst itself.
