Abstract: The dwarf nova AT Ara is one of the last cataclysmic variables brighter than 15m in quiescence for which not even the most basic parameters have been determined. Here, the first time-resolved spectroscopic study is presented which is based on 56 spectra of AT Ara, obtained during the nights 2000, June 30, July 1 and July 2 at the 1.6-m telescope of the Laboratório Nacional de Astrofísica (LNA), Brazil. The observed spectral range (~5818 -- 6625Å) encompasses the He I 5876Å and Hα emission lines as well as numerous absorption lines suitable for a detailed analysis of the late type component of AT Ara.
