Abstract: To study the stellar kinematics, we propose a new method based on decomposing of proper motions on a set of orthogonal vectorial spherical functions. The first degree harmonics of the decomposition are identical with the terms of the Ogorodnikov—Milne model, whereas the high order harmonics are able to detect the effects that are beyond the model. The method is applied to examine the stellar velocity field for various samples from the HIPPARCOS catalogue. Besides the classical contributions to the proper motions (Solar motion, rotation of the Galaxy, etc.) our method revealed some harmonics the physics of which requires further study.
