Abstract: We consider the role of interactions of the two types of subsystems related to active galactic nuclei (AGNs): (1) The "internal" subsystems, i.e., a supermassive black hole, a compact stellar cluster, and a gas subsystem. (2) The "external" subsystems, i.e., interacting galaxies in groups and clusters of galaxies. From these interactions, we estimated two characteristic times: the duty time of AGNs (the time in the active state), and the time in between the high activity states, which depends on the redshift and the environment (the clustering of neighboring galaxies).
