Abstract: We have performed a combined variability and proper motion survey (VPMS) for AGNs on more than 200 digitized Schmidt plates of two fields with a time-baseline of more than three decades. Variability and proper motions were measured for more than 50,000 objects down to B=20.5. Follow-up spectra were taken for numerous AGN candidates. Surveys like the VPMS are expected to provide an independent check of the selection effects of more conventional surveys. The talk shall present the search method, the expected selection effects, and the preliminary results of the VPM survey. The properties of the sample of the detected AGNs shall be briefly discussed as well.
