Abstract: Follow-up spectroscopy of QSO candidates from the VPMS revealed an unexpectedly large number of nearby (z < 0.3) galaxies with prominent narrow emission lines. The properties of this sample of NELGs are not satisfactorily explained by the assumption of artificial variability assigned to a random sample of ''normal'' field galaxies. A relation to AGNs is suggested due to the strong variability. To clarify the origin of the emission lines, spectra were taken with improved resolution and S/N ratio and are used to measure diagnostic line ratios. The results shall be presented in this poster along with other properties of the NELGs.
