Abstract: We present recent progress in an eight-octant phase-mask (8OPM) coronagraph. We manufactured a phase-mask utilizing a nematic liquid crystal (NLC), which can be switched between the 8OPM and a four-quadrant phase-mask (FQPM) modes. We carried out laboratory experiments on the coronagraphs by using the NLC mask. The experiments demonstrate that the 8OPM coronagraph has a better tolerance of the tip-tilt error than the FQPM one. We manufactured also a fully achromatic 8OPM made of a photonic crystal (PC) device. The PC-8OPM shows good coronagraphic performance (less than 10–5 at peak) for two laser sources (wavelengths of 532 nm and 633 nm).
