Abstract: The BL Lacertae object OJ 287 (z = 0.306) is unique in its class due to the optical outbursts that repeat every ∼ 12 years. The models explaining this behavior usually involve a pair of supermassive black holes orbiting each other with a roughly 12 year period. The next outburst of OJ 287 is expected to occur in 2006. We describe the observing program we are preparing to monitor the 2006 event and to test the various models proposed for OJ 287.
