Abstract: I review informally the highlights of research, instrumentation development, and operations at CTIO during the years I was there. That period covered the completion of the Blanco 4-m telescope and the development of CTIO into a fully operating observatory with the largest telescope and some of the most powerful instruments in the southern hemisphere. I also comment on the subsequent changes that occurred in astronomy and at CTIO after 1986, and on the future prospects and opportunities of CTIO and the AURA Observatory in Chile.
