Abstract: We combine X-ray and near-infrared (NIR) statistics to address the question whether Sgr A*'s X-ray flares stem from a very high energetic synchrotron process or arise from a synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) process. We re-analyze already published data from Chandra's 2012 XVP campaign and relate our statistical finding to known statistics of the NIR flux density distribution. We model the X-ray flare count rate distribution with an exponentially truncated powerlaw of the form p(x)∝ x-αx exp(–λx). Using approximate Bayesian computation (ABC) we estimate the scaling parameter to be αx1.65. Considering certain observational constraints a similar value can be algebraically derived from a canonical SSC model. This indicates that SSC plays a dominant role in the X-ray flare mechanism of Sgr A*.
