Abstract: The prevalence of high speed network connectivity and powerful computing platforms has brought the concept of distributed data and image archives to the forefront of network communications research. This paper discusses the applicability of a distributed information model for national and international astronomical data archives based on evolving communications standards. A prototype archive node at the National Optical Astronomy Observatories which utilizes prevalent network information protocols is described, and the extension of this archive into the proposed U.S. National Research and Education Network (NREN) is examined.
