Abstract:	We believe that the future of astronomical data analysis software lies in a shared effort to make our present systems easier to use and more responsive to the needs of the astronomical community. Our recent prototyping efforts have been directed toward the development of a set of IRAF-compatible interface tools, including an X11 graphical user interface, that can be used by IRAF and non-IRAF programs alike. It is our hope that this AXAF Science Support Interactive Software Tool (ASSIST) will make it possible for our IRAF-based software development group to collaborate with other software groups, without imposing a particular environment on anyone.
