Abstract: We present the first two- and three-dimensional studies of outbursts in CVs and soft X-ray transients (SXTs). A Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics code is used to follow the behaviour of the disc through outbursts. The incorporation of the full tidal potential leads naturally to the superoutburst/superhump phenomenon in SU UMa systems. We incorporate the effect of irradiation of the disc by the central X-ray source in X-ray transients. The form of the light curve, including the rebrightening observed in many outbursts, is determined by competition between the disc instability and the irradiated, thermally stable region of the disc.
