Abstract: Increasingly after-school programs are looking to sciences like astronomy for content and activities that are suitable for the kids who attend their programs. Astronomy has some excellent things to offer, but the after-school realm is really different than the classroom. This workshop featured group discussions of some of those differences and how they translate in offering appropriate professional development of after-school program personnel. The intent of the workshop was to provide a “networking with a focus” experience for participants who wanted to learn about after-school programs and to contemplate how the work that they (the participants) do might contribute to after-school. Thus the role of the presenters was to provide some structure (including imposing some limits on discussion times) and to moderate the sharing of ideas and information that came out of the small group discussions. The highlights of the discussions and some information about after-school programs are included in this paper.
