Abstract: When the metallicity Z is lower than a few times 10–5, the scarcity of CNO nuclei and the consequent weakness of the H-burning shell lead to important deviations from the canonical evolutionary scenario for low-mass AGB stars. In particular, thermal pulses are stronger, the third dredge-up is deeper and, most important, the first fully developed thermal pulse may generate a convective zone capable of capturing protons from the overlaying H-rich layers, causing a violent H-burning thermonuclear runaway. Based on full-network stellar evolution calculations, we discuss the consequences of this occurrence.
