Abstract: An important component of ESIS that controls the system is the ESIS Reference Directory. This metadatabase contains a variety of information on remotely-accessed images, spectra or light curves. It plays an important role in the homogeneous access of a variety of astronomical catalogues, by the use of a strict naming convention of fields, providing commands which are used in conjunction with the display and manipulation packages of ESIS to remotely access the data. We discuss in this paper the methods used to set up a reference directory as a central repository and mechanisms used to access the metadata to resolve ESIS queries and the methods used to access the data.
