Abstract: Over the past few years, the sensitivity of mm/sub-mm receivers has improved dramatically. We are now at the point of the atmosphere and other inevitable sources of noise being equal to, or perhaps greater than, the noise contributed by the receiver itself. Under such conditions, the observing efficiency (for mapping extended regions) may be improved by adding receivers in the focal plane in the manner of the CCDs used in optical astronomy. Details of the principles involved and brief descriptions of existing systems will be given.
