Abstract: Distances to Galactic supernova remnants are often difficult to determine. The method of using HI absorption spectra is not new, but observations have improved much in recent years in resolution (spectral and spatial) and in sensitivity, making this method much more powerful than it was previously. Recent improvements to the standard method are described. Results of application of the new method to several supernova remnants, using data from the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey, Very-Large-Array Galactic Plane Survey and Southern Galactic Plane Survey, are given.
