Abstract: While there has been much attention paid to improving astronomy courses for non-science majors in the past decade, a fundamental question remains: How do we know that they are in fact learning in these courses? Online courses provide a fresh vehicle for testing new approaches to assessing student learning, especially assignments which focus on the higher levels of Bloom’s taxonomy. Coupling this with assignments which engage the students with the material by making it relevant to their own lives leads to new methodologies for assessing student learning.
