Abstract: We present the results of comparisons between the SPH code SEREN and the AMR code MG for the thin shell instability, Kelvin–Helmholtz instability and moving polytropes. These show that there is good agreement for the thin shell instability and moving polytropes, but SPH only give satisfactory results for Kelvin–Helmholtz instabilities with a quintic kernel and artificial thermal conduction. For problems without self-gravity, SEREN requires approximately 20–50 times more computation time to achieve the same accuracy as MG, even without the use of AMR.
