Abstract: We propose a simple MHD fast wave propagation problem for verification and comparison of different numerical methods and MHD codes. The initially smooth MHD fast waves get steepening with time and eventually form shocks. Because the MHD shock moves slow compared with the fast magneto-sonic speed, many numerical methods and codes produce artificial numerical oscillations near the shock even if these numerical methods have the non-oscillatory property. The amplitude of the oscillations depend on Riemann solver, spatial limiter, and the accuracy order of reconstruction. The Riemann-solver-free central scheme on overlapping grid developed by the author (2008) performs extremely well for this type of problems.
