Abstract: General education, introductory astronomy is often the final science course in life for non-science majors. Instructors' goals for these general education, introductory astronomy courses typically include not only science content but also developing in their students a greater understanding of the role that science plays in society. In this one hour, special-interest group discussion, we initiated a conversation about what we, as educators and researchers, are doing to promote and study students' understandings of the role science plays in society. As part of the discussion, we shared data we gathered from college students enrolled in a general education, introductory astronomy class.
