Abstract: This Special Interest Group session discussed the Astro101 class using the academic rigor definition of “being actively engaged in higher order thinking about meaningful content.” The discussion was also influenced by the conference in the two preceding days, where many speakers addressed the issue of the shift away from content coverage in favor of focusing on science as a process and getting students to like and appreciate science. Often, the Astro101 course contains little or no mathematics. However, mathematics is underpinning all of astronomy. Hence, the philosophical question can be asked if an Astro101 course can be considered academically rigorous, when it is lacking the central tool of the discipline.
