Abstract: We combine Spitzer IRS 5–35 μm low-resolution spectra of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) with their ground-based 3–4 μm spectra, to search for the signatures of a strong dust temperature gradient. This method can be used to distinguish whether ULIRGs are powered primarily by starbursts or contain powerful active galactic nuclei (AGNs) deeply buried in dust.
