A multiple-object fiber-optics coupled system (MOFOCS) for low-resolution spectroscopy designed for use with a Schmidt-type telescope is described. Attention is given to the characteristics of the fiber link, the special aperture plate (in which the fiber ends are glued to the transparent stellar images on the plate), and the spectrograph, which will be placed on a vibrationally isolated optical table. Particular consideration is given to the target acquisition and guiding, which will be accomplished with the aid of a dedicated fiber bundle. Some results on observations using the prototype MOFOCS are presented, including a spectrum of a carbon star. |
