Abstract: Observations of the star formation properties of nearby disk galaxies provide important clues to their past evolution. Recent progress in the measurement of global star formation rates in galaxies, with special emphasis on those techniques which may be applied to distant galaxies is reviewed, and what these data reveal about the past and future stellar birthrates in disks, the physical processes which regulate disk evolution, and the role of evolution in the Hubble sequence are discussed.
