Abstract: Preliminary results from a K band imaging survey of 53 optically selected field galaxies with known redshifts ranging from 0.018 to 0.35 are presented. The sample is complete to B less than 20.5 and has UBRI photometry. To demonstrate the absolute calibration of the measurements, results of a direct photometric comparison of two different near-infrared array detectors are reported. The spectroscopic redshifts of sample are used to explore the reliability of redshifts measured from broad-band colors. Finally, the merits of optical-near-infrared multicolor distributions for studying galaxy evolution are illustrated. The results complement deeper near-infrared surveys that do not have spectroscopic redshifts.
