Abstract: Recent discoveries of close relationships between the radio and optical properties of powerful, high redshift 3CR radio galaxies are reviewed. These include the alignments of distant galaxies and their associated radio sources, and the extremely good correlation between radio lobe and emission-line gas asymmetries. The possible source of ionization of this gas and the radio spectral and polarization properties are discussed briefly. These results show that the origin and evolution of radio galaxies, their environment, and the interaction between them are inextricably connected.
