Abstract: We present a brief review of recent efforts to understand the lifecycle of active region magnetic fields with an emphasis on what photospheric observations can tell us about the evolution of large-scale magnetic structures deep in the convective interior. A critical component of these efforts is to understand the dynamic connection between magnetic fields (at both large and small scales) observed threading the solar atmosphere and their sub-surface counterparts. We conclude our survey by presenting early results from a new numerical model capable of self-consistently incorporating both sub-photospheric layers and the low solar corona into a single computational domain.
